Biomass and production of two Halimeda species in the southwest new caledonian lagoon ArchiMer
Garrigue, C.
Two algal communities on unconsolidated sand, dominated by two Caulerpa populations, were studied in the southwestern New Caledonian lagoon. Biomass, growth rates and production were measured at two stations over one year. Biomass and growth rate of Halimeda were estimated monthly by counting the number of new and lost segments on tagged plants and by weighing them. Production was assessed monthly by comparing two successive measurements. The average rates measured were 0.60 s f-1 d-1 (segment frond-1 day-1 ) for Halimeda incrassata and 0. 15 s f-1 d-1 for H. discoidea. Production in terms of organic carbon amounted to 3.79 g m-2 y-1 for H. incrassata and 3.37 g m-2 y-1 for H. discoidea. The production of H. discoidea population is subject to seasonal...

Biomasse et répartition de Caulerpa taxifolia dans les lagons de Nouvelle-Calédonie ArchiMer
Garrigue, C.
The biology and ecology of the green tropical algae Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh have been studied in the lagoons of New Caledonia (South Pacific) with a view to understanding the invasion which began in 1984 in the northwest Mediterranean Sea. A total of 1772 stations were used to establish the spatial and depth distribution of this species, which can be considered as common in New Caledonia, since it has been found in 9 % of the stations. C. taxifolia occurred mainly at depths between 10 and 30 m. Monthly sampling has shown that its growth is maximum during the southern hemisphere spring. From 180 stations randomly sampled in the southwest lagoon we obtained a mean biomass of 0.046 g afdw/m(2), which accounts for only 0.18 % of the...

Searching for humpback whales in a historical whaling hotspot of the Coral Sea, South Pacific ArchiMer
Garrigue, C; Derville, S; Bonneville, C; Baker, Cs; Cheeseman, T; Millet, Laurent; Paton, D; Steel, D.
Humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae were severely depleted by commercial whaling. Understanding key factors in their recovery is a crucial step for their conservation worldwide. In Oceania, the Chesterfield-Bellona archipelago was a primary whaling site in the 19th century, yet has been left almost unaffected by anthropogenic activities since. We present the results of the first multidisciplinary dedicated surveys in the archipelago assessing humpback whale populations 2 centuries post-whaling. We encountered 57 groups during 24 survey days (2016-2017), among which 35 whales were identified using photographs of natural markings (photo-ID), 38 using genotyping and 22 using both. Humpback whales were sparsely distributed (0.041 whales km-1): most...
